Charles Bradley and his success in the music business at an age where most wouldn’t expect to find fame is an amazing tale of dedication and redemption. The talented soul singer died last Saturday after a long bout with cancer, sparking a flood of responses from musicians who admired him across social media.

Billboard reports:

Music stars such as Questlove, Neko Case, and El-P paid tribute to the singer on social media following the news of his passing.

“Respect to Brother Charles. So Much Soul,” Roots drummer Questlove captioned a black-and-white photo of Bradley on Instagram.

The outlet adds that Bradley’s stomach cancer had been contained but that it spread to his liver, forcing him to cancel dozens of shows earlier in the month. Bradley fell ill in 2016 but valiantly continued his robust performance schedule as best he could. He released three albums under the Daptones label, including 2016’s Changes.

According to the singer’s publicist, Bradley was surrounded by friends, family and band members in his final moments.

Charles Bradley was 68.
